As you know I filmed a public service announcement supporting the RBaby Foundation and recently, I had the pleasure of attending the annual R Baby Food and Wine Gala at the Plaza Hotel.
While I know the story of how RBaby Foundation was born out of the tragic passing (Born healthy, Rebecca developed suspicious symptoms that were misdiagnosed as a common cold in the Emergency Room. Discharged from the hospital, Rebecca died the next morning– at just nine days old –the result of the entroviral infection that could have been treated if properly diagnosis) of Andrew Rabinowitz, Partner and COO of Marathon Asset Management, and his wife Phyllis’ newborn daughter, I was proud to do my little part in helping raise awareness and support of a cause that impacts children all over the country.
As you can well imagine, The Plaza was an amazing place to bring together people to support RBaby and boy what a crowd. While Edward Kennedy, Jr. was the keynote speaker and I was riveted by Phyllis’s speech reminding us that babies are not mini-adults and require specialized medical training and equipment. And that Emergency Room doctors must be properly trained and confident while treating infants and most importantly, every minute can make the difference between a life or death outcome. Did you know that to date, there is no standard definition of a Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) in the U.S. and little clarification provided to parents on where to find the best available care for their children in an emergency? Truly scary!
But the the highlight of the evening for me was cheering on Julia Beck, of Forty Weeks who received the first every RBaby Champion Award for her work with the Foundation. Julia is an amazing woman and I was happy to be there dressed to the nines like a celebrity to support her amazing work. I truly don’t know how she does it.
