X-Men: First Class is the reboot/prequel of the successful X-Men series that has grossed over $1.5 Billion dollars.
X-Men: First Class tells the story how it all began, how Magneto/Erik Lensherr (Michael Fassbender) meets Professor X/Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) as well as introducing major X-Men Mystique/Raven (Academy Award nominee Jennifer Lawrence); The Beast (Nicholas Hoult); Emma Frost (January Jones); Angel Salvadore (Zoe Kravitz, yes, Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet’s daughter) and Havok (Lucas Till)
I will admit after the last couple of movies I had low expectations but wow, I was completely wrong about this reboot. But from the beginning of the movie to the climatic ending, this was an eXceptional ride and will stand out as the movie to see this summer and one of the best prequel ever made.
The movie begins in World War 2, specifically the Holocaust when we see the young Erik being torn away from his parents at the internment camps and he bends the gate in angers and ends during the Cuban missile crisis with the X-Men or should I say X-Men: the 90210 kids meaning, with the exception of Magneto and Professor X, the X-Men are teenagers saving the world from nuclear annihilation.
What I loved about X-Men – First Class:
- James McAvoy as Charles Xavier/Professor X and Michael Fassbender as Magneto are perfectly cast at the leads in this movie. See what happens when you cast attractive men who can actually act, have great chemistry and work well together. Their relationship as friends and then adversaries is totally believable. James McAvoy, a very good actor no one knows in the US is a delight in this movie completely using his telepathic powers to charmingly pick up women and Michael Fassbender is totally hot, all angsty, angry at what Sebastian Shaw, aka the Nazi did to him during the war.
- X-Men – the teens are also perfectly cast. They are cute, can act and totally likable.
- The plot and dialogue . The plot actually made sense and the dialogue actually sounded normal. Yes, there were fight scenes and explosions but I did not feel like it was a bad Michael Bay film which is basically, some words, big explosions, pretty girl, blow crap up movie. There was actually some thought to how this movie was going to be made.
- NO 3-D enough said.
What I did not like about X-Men – First Class:
- The black Teen X-Men, Darwin (Edi Gathegi) dies – wow, I thought we had stopped doing that Hollywood.
- Not only is Angel Salvadore a fictional X-Men character, they had to make her a teen stripper. Good Grief and I don’t want to get into how creepy it was to see the two leads in the VIP room. Ewww!!!
- January Jones as Emma Frost – Does she have one expression all the time? Yes, she’s hot and even hotter as Diamonds but seriously, her face never changes throughout the movie.
All in all, two thumbs, 5 stars. Even if you are not an X-Men fan, heard of any of the characters, it’s a great summer movie.
