As part of our Wreck -It Ralph Press Day at Disney Animation Studios tour, we were privy to not only learning about how the voiceovers for Wreck-It Ralph were done but were able to actually record a segment from the movie.
I must admit that I was shocked we were going to be able to record in the same recording studio where John C. Reilly (voice of Wreck-It Ralph) and Sarah Silverman (voice of Vanellope von Schweetz, a 9-year-old racer and glitch in Sugar Rush) recorded their tracks. After I got over my shock, I was a tad hesitant to do it but was game and frankly, thought how hard could it be. Ah, arrogance. Recording Vanellope’s voice is not easy as it sounds. All I had to do was pretty much sound like a snarky kid with the same tone that Sarah uses. Goodness me, I actually had to do my segment twice since I did not talk fast enough and did not end on cue with the on screen character.
Note that I was the only one in my group who had to do-over their scene. Nonetheless I had a fun time in the studio being coached by who was extremely supportive in trying to get a good performance from me. It is not often one gets to act like a star so this was truly a unique experience.
3 Things I learned Doing Wreck It Ralph Voiceover:
1. Recording a voiceover is difficult. I used to make fun of actors who do the voices for animated movies and television shows. No more, it’s takes a lot to stand in front of microphone, sound interesting and engaging. And it’s pretty darn difficult to stay in rhythm with the onscreen visuals.
2. Actors can record their voiceovers remotely. I actually thought all the actors have to record in person at the Burbank Disney Studio and have a sound technician work with them to record their piece. Technology has come so far, that the actors can actually do it from a remote location. With being able to record remotely, the studios aren’t beholden to an actor’s schedule of having to fly to LA and then back to their project location.
3. Actors can be called in weeks or months later, just to record a line, a sound or just a word. Crazy, right
