Skinny girls are always saying insane things like “I forgot to eat” or “I am a picky eater” or “I was too tired to cook so I ate a bowl of cereal” well that may be true but I just think some of them will themselves not to eat. That’s fine if you want to will yourselves not to eat but don’t torture me with your crazy especially when you are hosting guests.
Case in point – This past weekend, my friend Jane set up a “dinner” meeting with a friend of hers who was looking for my social media expertise for her burgeoning business.
“Sure why not” I thought thinking this is good opporutunity to network and actually provide someone with my social media expertise. “Win- Win as they say.”
For non-New Yorkers, most people do not entertain in their homes unless they have really big apartments so it’s the norm to meet people at restaurant.
That morning, I confirmed our dinner “date” and inquired as to where we would meet for dinner. Jane told me she would get back to me. A few hours later she texted me to meet at her friend’s apartment. I knew nothing about this woman other than she was starting a business and that my friend had met her through our respective pre-school so I really had no expectations other than to think that given her address, I thought she might live in a brownstone. Wrong.
The friend actually lived in a two bedroom (okay, size, nothing fancy or big) with her daughter. Apparently, she was now divorced and had to scale down.
Now let me just say from the outset I had no major expectations, I did not expect dinner even if were meeting at 7pm nor did I think we were going to dinner after “cocktails.”
So what did she serve us, your basic brie cheese, gouda, grapes and crackers. That was it. I had brought some champagne because I really did not want to drink a lot and I knew I would only drink a glass. Now if I was there for an hour or even maybe an hour and half, I don’t think I would be making such a big fuss but we did not leave until after 10. At some point, one gets sick of cheese and crackers. And imagine, if my friend hadn’t brought half the cheese, we would have had less cheese to eat in three hours. Some olives, bread would have been nice and few slices of salami.
So as I stared at this perfectly coiffed blond, size 6 woman, I thought this is how skinny women stay skinny. They just don’t eat a lot, so that means you don’t get to eat a lot.
And yes, when I got home at 10:30, I had a ham and cheese sandwich.
Has this ever happened to you where you were invited during the dinner hour and left hungry?
