Where’d You Go, Bernadette starring Cate Blanchett
Summer means blockbuster action pictures like Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man Far From Home, MIB: International and blockbuster Disney movies like The Lion King and Toy Story 4 all of which I have seen and enjoyed but I love a good well acted interesting premise of a dramedy like Where’d You Go, Bernadette.
Regardless of whether you are a mom or not, I think everyone is always wondering, “am I living my best life?” and “am I living my life passionately?”
Based on the runaway bestseller, Where’d You Go, Bernadette is an inspiring comedy about Bernadette Fox (Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett), a loving mom who becomes compelled to reconnect with her creative passions after years of sacrificing herself for her family. Bernadette’s leap of faith takes her on an epic adventure that jump-starts her life and leads to her triumphant rediscovery.
I really enjoyed this movie because it does bring up those questions and that in my opinion, sometimes you need to take drastic measures or moments of self-care to live your life rather live for other people. Cate Blanchett as she always does takes to the role of “Bernadette” with relish. I loved watching her go from taking care of everyone else, anxiety-driven, stay at home, anti-social mom to rediscovering her true passion. And the movie is indeed funny! Not funny rolling on the floor funny but definitely will bring a smile to your face throughout the movie.
Kristen Wiig as the next-door neighbor, Audrey is funny and annoying at the same time. Let’s all hope no one has her as their neighbor. Bernadette is oddly likable but this was a 2-hour movie. I think that like her next-door neighbor Audrey and the other private school moms, I would find her not so likeable if I had to deal with her for years.
Billy Crudup really does not have a lot of do other than be the good looking, put upon but supportive husband. And adding his gravitas to the movie is Laurence Fishburne.
This is a spoiler alert, the couple has been married for years and the daughter who is now 15 loves her mom and thinks of her as her best friend should have seen there was something wrong with Bernadette years ago. Seriously no husband is that patient for that long a period of time even if he is a supportive, workaholic tech genius. And frankly I find it hard to believe given it’s Billy Crudup who is supposed to be this “hot”, Ted Talk genius has not had an affair or even given it a thought. There had to have been women along the way who would have hit on him over the years.
And I did not read the book, but the ending was just too perfect of an ending. I wish my life could be wrapped up so neatly.
The rest of the cast includes Billy Crudup, Kristen Wiig, Emma Nelson, James Urbaniak, Judy Greer, Troian Bellisario, Zoe Chao, and Laurence Fishburne.
I do recommend seeing the movie but it might be for some worthy of waiting. It is fun, uplifting movie to offset all the blockbusters. And there are scenes in this movie of the Antartica that are just stunning to see on the big screen.
WHERE’D YOU GO, BERNADETTE opens August 16th!
