Won’t Back Down, a new Fox Studios film featuring Viola Davis, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Holly Hunter opens September 28, 2012.

Won’t Back Down follows Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis,  two determined mothers, one a teacher, who will stop at nothing to transform their children’s failing inner city school. Facing a powerful and entrenched bureaucracy, they risk everything to make a difference in the education and future of their children. The film is inspired by the work of dedicated parents, teachers and advocates across the country.

Review: After summer months of comic book and action pics, this feel-good, inspirational, you can beat the system drama will make you cry, smile and maybe, clap a bit. Won’t Back Down is a David and Goliath story that pits two moms,  Viola Davis giving her best Viola Davis understated demeanor who comes alive when confronted by Maggie Gyllenhal’s semi-literarate, working two jobs, single mom fighting to get her poor dyslexic daughter a good education.

That said, I know this movie is inspired by true events which I did not even try to research as I think the movie should stand on it’s own otherwise it’s a documentary.Be forewarned that this movie does side against the teacher’s union and much of the rhetoric that has been written and stated over the years will be repeated in the movie.

While I did think the movie overall was well-written, well-paced and well-acted, there were a few gaps that are missing that for me made me ponder. Whether it would have added to the movie is another story. Examples include:  the Maggie Gyllenhaal single mom haas two jobs, one of which is at night but there is no mention of who watches the nine year old daughter, also the mother  ends up dating a teacher at the school which I think obviously happens but he doesn’t seem to suffer any repercussions from colleagues, the Principal for dating a parent who is trying to change the school, the Viola Davis character’s marriage seems to be trouble and then one day the husband has moved out. What happened? Again, not sure if it would have added anything more, other than a longer movie but it just seemed to warrant a line or two to explain the gaps.

Would I recommend it? Yes and No. If you have a passion for education, like inspirational movies that are well acted than this is movie for you. If anything it will inspire you to get off your butt and help others whether it your child’s school or another organization.  If you don’t have kids, it may not appeal to you although again, the movie serves as a testament to those individuals who bravely change the system against all odds.
