URBAN- Circolombia from Cali, Colombia, now playing at the New Victory Theater is an edgy, acrobatic, circus-style spectacle but not the clown kind. From the barrios of Cali, Colombia, URBAN is a take-no-prisoners acrobatic tour de force that balances risk and reward, defiance and delight.
We loved the show from beginning to end. The show featured phenomenal acts with performers on the trapeze, tightrope and triple dutch ropes set to a hypnotic hip-hop score all with a swagger from the barrios of Cali, Columbia. My favorite line of the show, “poets write with their feet” and these performers really do perform with their feet. The finale was definitely are favorite. One thing I also liked was that there was a scene where one of the performers talked about his very poor existence in Cali and who finding the troupe saved his life. While it doesn’t hit you over the head, its a teachable moment for kids to learn and understand how poor some kids live.
Prior to viewing the show, we enjoyed a dinner and game time at Dave and Buster’s Times Square as well as “Learn How to Juggle” mini-Family Workshop led by a New Victory Theatre resident artist.
