Remember the iconic photo V-J Day in Times Square, a photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt, of a sailor kissing the nurse in Times Square. Well, there is now a 25 foot statue by Seward Johnson that resembles that iconic photo sitting alongside the San Diego Port in Tuna Harbor Park. You can’t miss the “Unconditional Surrender” statue if you walk along the Pier.
The “Unconditional Surrender” statue sits right next to the USS Midway aircraft carrier so it’s a nice one-two punch of visiting the aircraft carrier and then wander over to the park. It’s fun to watch couples mimic the pose. It’s a nice teachable moment for kids too. I had to, of course, explain to my daughter the significance of the statue and showed her the original photo after our tour.
I was in SD in April and totally missed this.
I would have missed it too except it was near the Midway aircraft carrier.
That such an amazing moment…definitely a timeless capture.
Wow, that is quite the statue.

Have a statuetastic week 😉

Very cool statue, It’s a great shot.
It’s not until you see the real people that you realize how big it is.
Enjoy the day!!
