Did you know that the average age of a new smoker in New York State is 13 years old? I will admit that I was surprised how young smokers are but I guess I shouldn’t be shocked since living in New York City, I see tobacco products sold at newsstands, bodegas and “smoke” stores located every few blocks.
That said, it comes as no surprise that tobacco companies are spending billions to put their products in front of our kids in stores. I have seen over the many years, how the tobacco companies have been doing this.
Now that I have a teenager exposed to tobacco, everywhere, I am very acutely on top of the issue because I believe that the more kids see tobacco, the more likely they are to start smoking.
I am sure my daughter is going to be faced with peer pressure to smoke cigarettes. And living in New York City, even though it’s illegal to sell to kids under 18 and a pack of cigarettes is close to $15 a pack, it’s not hard for kids to buy cigarettes.
I know my fellow parents of teens are also concerned their kids will take on a cigarette habit which is why I am taking part in the “Seen Enough Tobacco” campaign to pledge today to make New York a healthier place to live, work and play!
Our kids have seen enough. It’s time to take action and protect kids from being exposed to tobacco products in stores!
If you are Fed up and just plain had it with tobacco companies promoting their products to kids in New York State, let’s make Tobacco Free New York.
