In “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. Displaced from their native India, the Kadam family, led by Papa (Om Puri), settles in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France to open an Indian restaurant, the Maison Mumbai. And so the story goes… I truly enjoyed The Hundred Foot Journey from the characters, the scenery and the wonderful story telling. Check out my 5 reasons why you will enjoy the movie as much as I did.
5 Reasons to See “The Hundred Foot Journey”
1. Helen Mirren, of course. When is the last time she called in a performance? Mirren brings her A-Game to The Hundred Foot Journey, playing Madame Mallory , the icy proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin starred, classical French restaurant. Her French accent alone will bring chills.
2. Manish Dayal as Hassan Kadam brings a newcomer’s freshness to his role as well as a charismatic presence who holds his own with Ms. Mirren. And his scenes with co-star/love interest Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon) are sweet and integral to the movie. His story is one of many children of immigrants, how to stay true to your roots and your family while trying to make it in a new country.
3. The Food – At the end of the day, Lasse Hallström (just in case you forgot, he directed another “foodie” favorite, Chocolat) brings his directorial genius making the food another character in the movie. If you don’t like Indian food, this movie will make you want to try it. The market scenes with the characters picking out ingredients for the dishes and the actual dishes are just so much a part of the both cultures and makes quite an impression throughout the movie. The Hundred-Foot Journey abounds with flavors that burst across screen in such a mouth watering way.
4. Family and Home – And the end of day, I love the story line about the two worlds colliding and Hassan’s drive to find the comfort of home, in every pot, wherever he is.
5. The Cinematography – I love movies like The Hundred Foot Journey because it does take place outside the United States, taking you away from your every day life. The French scenes make you want to throw caution to the wind and settle into a small town in France.
Mix up your movie going choices this summer and head to see The Hundred Foot Journey. You will enjoy taking a break from your day to day life with a movie that blends two cultures together in a totally enjoyable and likeable movie.
