Spider- Man Homecoming is just like your favorite amusement park ride – lot of laugh, a thrill ride that provides you a ton of fun. Spider- Man Homecoming stars Tom Holland as the young Peter Parker/Spider-Man. After making his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War and thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter Parker returns home to live with his Aunt May and tries to return to his normal daily routine — distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just a friendly neighborhood superhero. Peter must soon put his powers to the test when the evil Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges to threaten everything that he holds dear.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is one of the most hotly anticipated movies of the summer if not the year, not just because he is such a beloved super hero, the movies make a ton of money but Spider-Man is now included as part of the Marvel Universe.
Spider-Man: Homecoming now stars Tom Holland (taking over from Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire) in the title role and he performs absolutely perfectly as the high-schooler Peter Parker. He is awkward with girls, trying hard to navigate life in his Queens high school all while doing good deeds as Spider-Man. I think this is what sets this movie apart from the others is going back to his life in high school.
Hi interactions with best friend Ned (look out for Jacob Batalon to be the next decade’s’ funny sidekick) are wonderfully funny. The superhero nerd and his nerd friend being all awkward with their fellow classmates especially the girls.
I loved Zendaya as fellow classmate Michelle. She is not so much hilarious as the “where did she come from friend?” heckling the two boys at every turn.
Two major figures Peter has to deal with is Tony Stark aka Iron Man who he is trying to impress with his Spider-Man night time activities protecting the city. Robert Downey, Jr is as always, does his best as the arrogant and narcissistic billionaire ignoring the kid and putting Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) in charge of looking after him.
Peter’s other nemesis is the Vulcan played by Michael Keaton. What makes the Vulcan different from other villains is that he isn’t “crazy” or a maniac who loses it one day, he is all about protecting his family and their way of life. Interesting twist that Vulcan seethes with class resentment and just wants to provide for his family.
I loved that while the film was actually shot elsewhere, the film makers show Queens in all it’s glory. Peter’s interaction with his favorite bodega owner, street scenes of the borough and the subways are like a another character in the movie. And more importantly, the movie gets the diversity of the high school. In the previous Spider-Man movies, maybe there were people of color but I can’t remember. This movie takes place in Queens, New York, of course it has people of color in it! Hello. Even Peter’s love interest is bi-racial.
Do I recommend seeing Spider-Man: Homecoming? Yes I do. It is the perfect summer movie.
Spider-Man: Homecoming opens July 7.
