Spider-Man™: Into the Spider-Verse introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) as the new Spider-Man. And yes, Spider-Man is NOT a young white boy in this new Spider-Man. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, bring their unique talents in giving Spider-Man fans, superhero fans and moviegoers a fresh vision of a different Spider-Man Universe.
What makes this movie all the more inventive, creative and unique is that it offers the narrative that
“more than one person can wear the mask.”
Without a doubt, Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse is the best Spider-Man movie ever and this is coming from a fan of Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. That is saying a lot since it’s animated and not live action.
What makes the Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse my favorite Spider-Man movie?
- It’s groundbreaking visual style. It’s just beautiful and adds another layer making it more than “animated” movie.
- The filmmakers break the fourth wall by introducing more Spider-People. And who are these Spider-People? There is older Peter Parker (Jake Johnson) who is broken up with Mary Jane; Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld); Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn), and her funny robot sidekick and the Spider-Ham (John Mulaney). Yes, Spider-Ham is a pig!
- But the focus and the heart of the story is Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) who is Afro-Latino (what???) who lives in Brooklyn but goes to boarding school outside of his borough (where is this mythical boarding school, I want to send my daughter!!) His journey from awkward teen balancing his Brooklyn life with boarding school to now having “great power” is a delight and offers us an entirely different story from the Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland who are white.
- It’s funny!!
- The hip-hop soundtrack. I will admit that hip-hop is not my favorite musical genre and that is not to say I don’t like hip-hop, it just not my favorite. Let’s say that you will enjoy the music.
I so recommend you see this movie on the big screen because it’s worth the money given how visually stunning it is on top of the story.
