Solo: A Star Wars Story
Why release Solo: A Star Wars Story now or as naysayers comment why mess with a good thing? Han Solo of Star Wars fame is one of the most iconic and beloved characters. His character was loved by both men and women fans. As the saying goes, men want to be him and women want to be him.
So what happens when Lucasfilm goes back in time to the origin story of Han Solo to board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy.
Donald Glover is Lando Calrissian in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY.
Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo befriends his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and meets the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.
There are so many reasons to like this movie.
Donald Glover is perfectly cast as the smooth and sophisticated Captain Lando Calrissian.
The character of VAL played by Thandie Newton. It goes without saying that there is more diversity in this movie and for this I am grateful. I am also grateful that Val that as a trusted member of Beckett’s crew, she gets to be the cool, bad-ass, and self-assured chick who is a crack shot with a blaster rifle. Go Val!
L3-37 is Lando’s co-pilot and a self-made droid assembled from astromech and protocol parts. Despite her make-up, L3-37 is an enlightened navigator who cares deeply about droid right. Star Wars would not be a Stars Wars movie without a trusty droid sidekick.
The relationship between Han Solo and Chewbacca. Their friendship is a movie phenomenon.
HAN SOLO played by Alden Ehrenreich kills it. Let’s face facts, he is the lead and if not for him, this movie would be pointless. Not to say that he did capture the essence, that maverick spirit, the charm of Han. He brings all those qualities to the role. That said, Alden Ehrenreich is not Harrison Ford. Who is and who can play him as a young Han Solo? I have no idea.
I did enjoy the movie mostly for the side characters and the action scenes especially the famous Kessel Run that has been referenced in previous movies. I will say finally, I love Ron Howard and I think he did an amazing job but it could have been shorter and some of the action scenes been tightly more edited. At some point, a fight can be 3-5 minutes shorter and we would be fine.
