Social Media Blackout – It’s Time to Say Goodbye to Facebook and Twitter
Social Media Blackout is a thing that I have recently embraced and adopted as a way to take back my time and hopefully become a more productive human being.
Tweens and Teens are not the only ones addicted to social media. Adults, in my opinion, are just as addicted to social media. I used to justify my checking Facebook and Twitter because of my blog then I justified it because I wanted to keep up with the news or what was trending.
This justification is just an excuse, it’s just a bold face addiction. During the day, I would check Facebook and Twitter on my commute to work, in between meetings and at lunch. What a hot mess!
So what made me delete the Facebook app from my phone, a glitch. One day, it just froze and I couldn’t get off the page. This never happened and after a day of it being frozen, I just deleted the app.
Even before the glitch, I had been extremely frustrated by Facebook’s algorithm nonsense. The fact that I see the same 10 people over and over again. The fact that I have to spend the first ten minutes hiding posts that I had already seen earlier in the day or the previous day made me realize how much of my life was being wasted cleaning up after Facebook! I also NEVER click on a sponsored post so I spent my precious time on this earth hiding ads. Of course, I know that this is a futile effort and I am giving Facebook information about my spending habits that they sell!!
Finally, I do NOT get my news from Facebook’s trending stories, if anything I try NOT to look at that box. It’s annoying and I know it’s not real trending news, it’s their algorithm at work.
Then there is the fact that my friends post the same information I read the day before. It’s not their fault. I keep up with the daily news so it’s just annoying to see people post a news story that in my mind is old news. And don’t get me started that people post links from questionable news sources. Why Facebook does nothing about fake websites is a mystery to me. I am kidding, it’s not a mystery to me!
After a few days, I just didn’t miss Facebook so I decided to delete the Twitter app. I kept Twitter because I liked the idea of checking the trending hashtags. I think we all know trending #hashtags are also not real. And I found myself reading people’s comments. More time wasted!!
It’s been over a week and I haven’t added either app back, but I will admit, I still instinctively check my phone.
Don’t get too excited by my blackout, I do check Facebook and Twitter before and after work. Now, I am working on decreasing the time I spend while I am home.
And I still check Instagram because I like to look at pretty pictures! So much for a total Social Media Blackout.
Do you think you spend too much on social media?

I have an add on for Facebook called Facebook Purity. It blocks ads and allows you to set up your news feed more how you like it. Can’t change FB’s algorithm, unfortunately. Glad that your blackout is going well. Stay strong 🙂

I only use facebook for my businesses for the most part- I don’t want it to go away! 🙂

At this point, I have to move away from using it personally and just use for business as well!! No way around getting away from Twitter and Facebook for business.
