Global icon Dwayne Johnson stars in SKYSCRAPER as former FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader and U.S. war veteran Will Sawyer, who now assesses security for skyscrapers. On assignment in China, he finds the tallest, safest building in the world suddenly ablaze, and he’s been framed for it. A wanted man on the run, will he find those responsible, clear his name and somehow rescue his family who is trapped inside the building above the fire line.
What is there to say about Skyscraper? I enjoyed it thoroughly. But let’s be clear, I am a big fan of summer action pictures. It’s hot outside, I don’t like to think too much about the plot holes and the this is not possible stunts!
That said, Dwayne Johnson is a likable action star who looks good shirtless, can do all those “oh my gosh” how did they do that stunt, loves his family and will do anything to save them and can fight the bad guys.
What makes this action picture stand out for me is that it is not the same old same old action picture with white male lead, and a bunch other white people. It is set in Hong Kong, one of my favorite cities which means Chinese and Chinese American Actors are front and center. Also, the villains include a Chinese woman who is ruthless and can fight!
Plus making a comeback (I think) is one of my favorite 90’s actress Party of Five’s Neve Campbell as Sarah Sawyer, Will Sawyer (Dwayne Johnson)’s wife.
And again, playing against the typical boring screaming I can do nothing wife or girlfriend, Sarah Sawyer is a decorated veteran and surgeon who speaks Chinese and can kick ass. Great model for women and girls.
Many people may scoff but this one of those action pictures that deserve to be seen on the big screen because much of will lose its impact on the television screen.
Take an afternoon off, enjoy some popcorn and just enjoy!
Rated PG-13 for sequences of gun violence and action, and for brief strong language.
