I love my iPhone dearly – Boy that is one sad statement. I use every app (or try every app) that will help me organize my life from reminder apps to shopping list apps to public school holiday apps to voice recorders to the all encompassing synched up calendar.
With all that help, you would think I would be so organized. NOT! I am here to testify that no app is going to replace the old-school Post-It note.
I rediscovered my love of the Post-It note in trying to organize my Editorial Calendar. Along with being the Editor of nycsinglemom.com, I am also the Editor for Brooklyn Mamas (and coming soon, New York Mamas) which means I actually have to assign articles to contributing writers and manage a monthly editorial calendar.
I took someone’s suggestion and tried to use google calendars but that took so much of time entering all the articles that I threw my hands up in surrender and did the next best thing, tried to keep in all in my head. Well that worked for awhile until I added another writer and assigned her the same topic from two months ago. Not only is that embarrassing, it’s not exactly professional.
So as I wondered around my second home, Staples hoping an organizing system would appeal to me. Then it struck me as I noticed those big desk calendars, remember those. I have no idea who still uses them but I thought Aha! – this would be perfect for me.
The desk calendar while too huge for my desk was actually perfect to place post it notes that include the article title and deadlines and most importantly, I could move the stories around when changes happen. As a visual person, the best thing about the desk calendar/post -it note combo was that I could actually look at the month in totality which on the computer was impossible to do.
So while it may seem retro and so 2000, it works for me.
