This past week, I had the pleasure of being on set of the Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth’s new show Mystery Girls about former stars who portrayed television detectives who suddenly are thrown together to solve a real life mystery. I will admit that I am such a behind the scenes, how do they do it, fanatic! When we arrived on set, the stars of the show were taping a scene or trying to tape a scene.
As we arrived on set the two strata were mid- scene. Watching the scene play out, Jennie kept flubbing her lines you realize that it’s not one take and your done and just as she was getting her line right, Tori whose role was to catch a prop couldn’t actually get it right either. Needless to say, it took several takes before they both got it right at the same time.
One of my favorite OMG moments was watching the in-between takes and all that happens. The “action” that took place in-between the scene between Tori and her co-star Ryan Mcpartlin (Detective Duane Freeman) was fascinating to watch. Fascinating in that a gaggle of people would come out and refresh Tori’s hair and make up and also to her male co-star. It takes a village yes to keep the stars looking fresh for each shot. Also, they both had to redo eat scene several times. The director providing or should I say yelling direction from a distance. And I forgot to mention even before the stars arrive, the stand-ins ran the lines and sat where the stars would seen to block the scene for the Director and to get the lighting right. Totally cool.
Just watching those two scenes, you can see why it takes so long to tape a 22 minute show.
It takes a Village to Film a Television Show
After they finished filming the scene, we actually got to walk the set including the Mystery Girls living room where most of the show is filmed. Totally fun!!. You get to see the tape on the floors where they have to “hit” their mark. And actually wander the hallway that is also the elevator bank.
Mystery Girls Living Room Set
New Mystery Girl? I am wearing pink
It’s hard to miss the signature color of the show, PINK! I fit right in with my polka dot pink dress.
Mystery Girls Costumes
I had to see the costumes for the show and as they said upfront, totally an unimpressive room. So sad since there were some great costumes and props in there.
Tori Spelling, Jennie Garth and Miguel Pinzon Cast Interviews
Interviews with the stars of the show, Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth proves that it’s important to maintain friendships no matter what because you never know when the opportunity to work together will present itself.
Tori discussed how she reached out to Jennie via email with her idea for the show, “no pressure” and lo and behold, Jennie loved the idea and voila, it was like old times. So where did the idea of Mystery Girls come from? Tori talked about her love of mystery shows citing Remington Steele as a favorite and wanting to pair that with comedy.
Did you know this is first time that Jennie has really been working on a series full time since her kids? Who knew. She talked about the long days but how she was having so much fun working with Tori again but she also mentioned that her kids come on set a lot.
Being on set with the two stars, you can get a sense of their long time friendship and watching them run their scenes, definitely a sense of their professionalism.
Newcomer Miguel Pinzon enthusiasm was infectious and one could see how he fit so well with Tori and Jennie. He was so engaging and excited to be talking about his first time working a 3 camera comedy. So who inspires him? One of the greatest comediennes ever, Carol Burnett. He even joked that “On lonely nights (yeah, right), I will be watching Carol Burnett.” See it doesn’t matter how young or old you are, funny is funny. What was great was that we were there when he found out that he just been nominated for a Teen Choice award for best Newcomer. And he was excited. Although he did say that his goal was to win an EGOT, good for him. You have to have goals otherwise why bother right.
It was a truly fun day, getting a behind the scenes tour of the set and of course, chatting with the stars of the show.
