4 MUST SEE SUMMER TELEVISION SHOWS
Playing House (USA)
My daughter and I fell in love with this 2015 show about best friends Maggie Caruso (Lennon Parham)and Emma Crawford (Jessica St. Clair) that returns for its third season June 23. Emma returns home for the birth of her best friend’s first child only to end up giving up her successful career to support her friend when she finds out her husband’s online affair. In case you were wondering it is a comedy. Their adventures raising Maggie’s daughter, dealing with Maggie’s ex-husband and their interactions with the town’s colorful characters are hilarious.
Keegan-Michael Key is a recurring character as Emma’s high school boyfriend is pitch perfect and oh so odd. Of course his wife Tina “Bird Bones” Rodriguez adds to the richness of the town’s inhabitants.
Broadchurch (BBC America)
David Tennant as Detective Miller leads a stellar cast in this crime drama set in a small beach town in southwest Britain. Coming for it’s third season on June 28 focuses on sexual assault victim who has trouble remember her assault.
I am sure that like the first two seasons, nothing is at it seems and never ends the way you think it will.
This is a very smart drama that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last scene. David Tennant as Detective Inspector Alec Hardy along with his co-star Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) are outstanding.

Game of Thrones (HBO)
George R.R. Martin’s best-selling book series “A Song of Ice and Fire” is brought to the screen as HBO sinks its considerable storytelling teeth into the medieval fantasy epic. It’s the depiction of two powerful families — kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars and honest men — playing a deadly game for control of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, and to sit atop the Iron Throne.
All I know is that this is one helluva a ride to see who will end up sitting on the Iron Throne.
Game of Thrones’ season seven begins July 16. “Winter is Coming.”

Animal Kingdom (TNT)
After a heroin overdose kills his mom, teenager Joshua “J” Cody moves to Southern California to live with his freewheeling relatives.
The family’s matriarch is J’s estranged grandmother, Janine “Smurf” Cody (Ellen Barkin) from whom he’s been shielded for years. J soon finds out the reason for the isolation — Smurf and “her boys” make their livings through carefully planned armed robberies and other criminal activities. Prominent perpetrators are Smurf’s relatively level-headed right-hand man Baz (Scott Speedman) and her three sons: mentally disturbed ex-con Pope, hyperactive drug user Craig (Ben Robson), and suspicious Deran (Jake Weary.) In order to stay alive, J must prove loyal to his beguiling grandmother, who rules with a borderline-incestuous love.
What is there not to love about this show? Surfing scenes, good looking bad boys who have a tendency to be shirtless, sex, drugs, and Ellen Barkin as the still smoking matriarch leading this group of criminals. This is definitely another one of those shows like Breaking Bad in which the leads are criminals that you are not sure if you want them to get caught or rooting for them. What makes this different is that at the end of the day is that it’s about family dynamics gone off the rails!!
And did I mention Ellen Barkin, talk about a resurgence. She is just killing it!!!
