REVIEW: Travelling Through History In the Mr. Peabody & Sherman Movie #MrPeabody @DWAnimation

March 6, 2014 by NYCSingleMom Filed Under: Entertainment, Movies

Mr. Peabody & Sherman movie coming out March 7 is based characters from Peabody’s improbable history segments which was part of the iconic 1960s animated television series The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman, Ty Burrell

Mr. Peabody (voiced by Modern Family’s Ty Burrell) is a business titan, inventor, scientist, Nobel Laureate, gourmand, two-time Olympic medalist, and genius… who also happens to be a dog.

Using his most ingenious invention, the WABAC machine, Mr. Peabody and his adopted boy Sherman (Max Charles) hurtle back in time to experience world-changing events first-hand and interact with some of the greatest characters of all time. But when Sherman breaks the rules of time travel, our two heroes find themselves in a race to repair history and save the future, while Mr. Peabody may face his biggest challenge yet – being a parent.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman stars the voices of Ty Burrell, Max Charles, Ariel Winter, Stephen Colbert, Leslie Mann, Patrick Warburton, Stanley Tucci, Allison Janney, Mel Brooks, Lake Bell, Zach Callison, Dennis Haysbert.

REVIEW: Mr. Peabody and Sherman is a really cute and engaging movie that you and your family will find entertaining, funny and actually informative. Because the premise of movie is time travel, instead of reinforcing historical myths, the screenwriters actually put to bed myths that somehow have become facts (e.g. George Washington cut down the cherry tree – it’s false.)  I love all the time travel locations like visiting Leonardo da Vinci in Florence and run into Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution.  These are funny scenes for adults and provides wonderful teachable moments about historical events albeit in an entertaining way that hopefully kids will remember. My daughter already knew about the Mona Lisa but did not know who painted her so that was a great.

While the time travel storyline takes up most of the movie, I really do like the  overarching message that families come in all shapes (yes, even the smartest dog in the world can be a dad.)  That said, I only objected to one character in the movie, kids probably will miss it but if you know the actor Patrick Warburton, you will just be annoyed at him play Agamemnon. His voice is just so grating and takes you completely out of the movie. I am sorry, this is not Seinfeld it’s a kid’s movie.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman is definitely a fun and engaging ride for movie goers.
