Alexander McQueen, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Homemade breakfast, Mother’s Day Poem and City Crab for dinner, all in one day, now that’s a great Mother’s day.
I don’t think much about Mother’s Day even though for weeks prior to the big day, you are bombarded by jewelry and flower commercials. For me Mother’s Day is a pretty uneventful day until this year. No, I did not win the lottery or receive diamonds (I wish) but this is the first time, my daughter truly acknowledged Mother’s Day. Sure in year’s past, she came home from pre-school with little homemade gifts but let’s face it that’s the teacher’s prompting not the child’s thinking about it.
But this year is different, my daughter actually stated that she had “special” Mother’s Day plans for me. She was so cute about it all week talking about her plans, how she and uncle John discussed where we were going for dinner. It just touched my heart.
The morning began with a homemade breakfast. Since my brother moved in, I get to actually go to the gym early on Sundays so while I was gone, I assumed they would be making breakfast. Wrong! While I I was at the gym, my daughter left a message that she made breakfast by herself and did not want to wake Uncle John. That is one determined little girl to do this by herself and quite considerate of her Uncle John not to want to wake him.
When I came home, she told me to close my eyes, so I could not see her surprise. You can see her surprise below, my breakfast on a tray with eggs, bacon, toast and orange juice. I am sure you are wondering how an 8 year old made eggs and bacon with no adult supervision, she is really is a food savant – kidding, she microwaved leftovers. Yes, she knows how to use a microwave. Her precious note reads (the spelling needs a little work but I don’t care as I am thinking what would the Tiger Mom say?)
Dear Mom,
Your the reason why I wanna get out of bed.
Your the reason why they sun shines.
Your the best.
Love, your daughter
After we enjoyed our breakfast, we headed up to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to view the Alexander McQueen- Savage Beauty exhbit. This was my choice but she was on board because her Fashion Design teacher told her about Alexander McQueen’s bumster (which i had forgotten all about) pants. As you can see, the trousers, are really low cut and you can see a person’s bum and crack. They were quite the talk when he designed them in 1996 and is credited with reviving low-cut trousers. Yes, we can thank Alexander McQueen for being able to see women’s thongs. That said, what is it about kids and bums? As we were standing discussing the bumster, the people around us, were amused by her comments about bums.
We both had a great time wandering the exhibit seeing his work. If you have a chance, GO!, I had forgotten about some his collections and how truly creative he was.
Then it was up to the Metropolitan Museum roof to enjoy the New York skyline and the Alex Caro Exhibit.
Dinner was quite the surprise. My brother and daughter chose a restaurant totally not on my radar, City Crab. I can’t even remember the last time, I had crab. It was truly delicious and let me say it will be long time before I have crab again. Wow, a pound of Alaskan King crab with butter is a lot of food.
All in all not a bad day for this single mom, not so much for the acknowledgement but because my daughter was so proud and excited about planning my day. That is is all the Mother’s Day gift I needed.
And just a shout out to my daughter’s godmother S for her Mother’s Day card. Much appreciated.
