Raold Dahl’s Matilda is a beloved children’s book. While we were in London, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to check the London (and original) production of Matilda the Musical. The musical masterpiece from the Royal Shakespeare is of course, inspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl, with book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin.
Matilda tells the inspiring tale of an orphan girl who dares to change her destiny. Matilda lives in a horribly run orphanage and is faced with having to deal with the corrupt, and mean headmistress Miss Trunchbull. I will admit this musical while it has kids in it and your kids will want to see it, be prepared that this is not Annie which has more of airiness and lightness to it. There is a bit of meanness and sadistic nature to the headmistress and she says horrible things to the orphans calling them “maggots” and “revolting.”
Remember, the English are much darker than Americans, funny but darker. That said, Matilda The Musical is really funny and reminds us how important books and the power of the imagination truly is. You will love the music which is infectious and when the kids sing as a group, is amazing. In the end it and yes, there is a happy ending. Your kids (and you) will definitely like the show.
