In Disney’s MARY POPPINS RETURNS, an all-new original musical and sequel, Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives following a personal loss. Emily Blunt stars as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any ordinary task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure and Lin-Manuel Miranda plays her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light—and life—to the streets of London.
I think that you are probably like me, WHY oh WHY, is Disney messing with the iconic Mary Poppins and how can Emily Blunt surpass Julie Andrews’ Mary Poppins. Well, skeptical as I was, Mary Poppins Returns hits all the right notes to make Mary Poppins Returns this generation’s iconic classic just as the 1964 Mary Poppins is an iconic classic.
Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins is phenomenal. She is perfectly cast, taking the audience on entirely new adventures as the Banks’ family nanny. From the moment she “arrives”, Emily Blunt holds your attention. The songs and her singing voice are lovely. Her interactions with all the supporting characters bring it all together and is pitch perfect. Without her, this movie would not work.
Lin-Manuel Miranda is Jack in Disney’s MARY POPPINS RETURNS. His appearance adds a lot of joy to the festivities and he is cute with his interactions with Emily Mortimer as Jane Banks. That said, I don’t think he does the English accent all to well and I found it a bit distracting.
Appearances by Angela Lansbury appears as the Balloon Lady, a treasured character from the PL Travers books and Dick Van Dyke as Mr. Dawes, Jr., the retired chairman of the bank brought cheers from those us who loved and seen the original Mary Poppins a hundred times.
The film also stars Ben Whishaw as Michael Banks; Emily Mortimer as Jane Banks; Julie Walters as the Banks’ housekeeper Ellen; Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and introducing Joel Dawson as the Banks’ children, with Colin Firth as Fidelity Fiduciary Bank’s William Weatherall Wilkins; and Meryl Streep as Mary’s eccentric cousin, Topsy.
