Did you know that Marvel’s Ant-Man was a founding member of The Avengers? Me either. Who knew, right! Marvel Studios’ “Ant–Man” brings master thief Scott Lang (starring everyone’s favorite funny side kick Paul Rudd) who through his relationship with his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) must protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant–Man suit from a new generation of towering threat. With his new astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, can Scott Lang as Ant-Man overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles along with mentor Dr. Pym to pull off a heist that will save the world and truly embrace his inner hero?
Marvel Ant-Man Review – Even though I have been a fan of Paul Rudd from way back in another century (remember Clueless starring Alica Silverstone), I was a bit skeptical about Ant-Man. Seriously, a stand-alone film about a man who becomes a super hero named Ant-Man. In my opinion, Ant Man would have better served as a minor character in an Avengers or Captain America film.
Wrong! After bringing The Guardians of Galaxy to the screen which is amazing, I should have known better. Marvel Ant-Man turned out to be a fast-paced, and lively action picture combining a “Honey I Shrunk the Kids” and “Ocean’s Eleven” (“heist film) feeling to it with Rudd, the mini-super hero going up against the Villain, Yellowjacket.
While this movie is an “action-pictured”, it also is an origin story about how Scott Lang, career thief came to be the Ant-Man after getting out of prison and meeting Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) whose Pym Particle can shrink people to the size of Ant. Yes, this is a comic book story.
What is appealing about this movie, is the story and the interactions amongst the main characters which is really a nice change of pace from the big, big screenness of the other Marvel movies. My only bugaboo is that they didn’t let Paul Rudd be Paul Rudd, yes he’s funny, self-deprecating and charming but I think they held back. This is ironic since Rudd and Adam McKay rewrote the script after the original director Edgar Wright left. Interesting, right!!
Would I recommend this film? Yes. You will be entertained, laugh and be totally surprised how much you like this movie just like you were surprised by The Guardians of Galaxy. Sometimes super heroes are not bigger than life. P.S. Comments from 12 year old daughter before the movie was one of skepticism, where does she get that from I wonder. “I am not sure about this movie” and after the movie “I am totally surprised, it’s different from The Avengers but I really like this movie, it’s really funny” That is an endorsement.
Warning: Spoiler Alert if you don’t like ants, you will be skeeved out, there are a lot of different types of ants in this movie. Congratulations to the special effects teams because they are eeww real looking.
