When her husband suddenly dumps her, longtime dedicated housewife Deanna (Melissa McCarthy) turns regret into reset by going back to college
Melissa McCarthy really is the Life of the Party. This movie rests on her comedic shoulders and she brings her “A” game as always. Life of the Party is a delightful, funny and inspiring romp. Yes, inspiring. Deanna takes her shattered life after her divorce, reevaluates her life and goes back to college to finish her degree.
Plunging headlong into the campus experience, the increasingly outspoken Deanna—now Dee Rock—embraces freedom, fun and frat boys on her own terms, finding her true self in a senior year no one ever expected.
Some may be somewhat offended that she takes up with a college boy I think it’s a rather refreshing twist given Hollywood always seems to have the middle-aged man take up with a younger woman to get his groove back. And frankly, McCarthy’s scenes with her young lover are hilarious and of course, the end result is that she gets her groove back along with a new found confidence and independence after spending most of her life being a good wife and mother.
Melissa McCarthy is definitely the star of this movie but Maya Rudolph as her supportive friend always steals the scenes she is in. And the rest of the cast from the “college” boyfriend to her daughter, the college girls who befriend and ask her for advice is great. And finally, I would be remiss to tell you that the dance scene is a throwback to another decade but McCarthy in all her hilarious glory is pitch perfect.
Totally enjoyed this movie, it was funny, lots of fun scenes, heart-warming and inspiring.
