This past weekend, I happened upon this huge 16 foot Kaws sculpture Companion Passing Through at the 30th Street Station in Philadelphia.
I first encountered Kaws (aka Brian Donnelly) work at last year’s Macy’s Day Thanksgiving Day parade where the first ever Kaws’ float made its debut. Brooklyn-based Artist Kaws is a well-known twisting and reimagining iconic cartoon characters like The Smurfs.
Can you figure out who COMPANION is reimagining? It’s Mickey Mouse, complete with gloves, shorts, and cartoon-shaped shoes just like the original character. As you can see, KAWS adds an inflated skull and Xs on the gloves.
Companion (Passing Through) will be at the Philadelphia 30th Street Station until May 14, 2013.

I can see Mickey Mouse in the hands, not the ears.

I can sort of, maybe see Mickey Mouse. Really, I see an old balding man.
