I learned about Homewood Suites by Hilton Hotels at a Kidz Vuz Event and was quite impressed by all the amenities the hotel had to offer. As we were headed to Washington, D.C for my daughter’s mid-winter break, I thought why not take the opportunity to check out the hotel in person.
The Homewood Suites by Hilton Washington is centrally located near major D.C. attractions including the White House, Smithsonian Institution museums, the Washington Mall and the Lincoln Memorial. All walking distance, I might add. As I don’t have a car, I was pleased that the hotel is just three blocks from McPherson Square Metro station making it super easy to get to from the Union Station. And if you are flying into Reagan National Airport, you are within 15 minutes by taxi.
Our room was a one-bedroom suite with a separate living and sleeping room, big enough for my sister and her son to stay with us. The suite comes fully equipped with a working kitchen, a microwave, full-size refrigerator, coffeemaker, twin-burner stove, and utensils. Since my sister lives in the area, she was able to bring some key staples for us to being able refridgerate and for our daily snacks.
As we all know one of the biggest expenses when traveling are meals. Having a working kitchen and fridge made it super convenient to make dinner. There is a Whole Foods a couple of blocks away so one night we made spaghetti and the second night we had chicken and veggies. As my sister had to leave early to head home, we just opted for simple mac and cheese for lunch before they left.
That said, don’t feel like cooking, there are plenty of restaurants nearby. On the last night, my daughter and I went to a Thai restaurant (Thaitanic – 1326 14th Street, NW) restaurant literally two blocks away and was treated to a yummy and inexpensive meal.
11 Additional Reasons Why You Should Stay at Homewood Suites:
1. A hot full breakfast each morning – talk about an amazing amenity, a hot breakfast, not your typical cold cereal, donut continental breakfast other hotels offer. My daughter has a tendency to eat a lot at breakfast costing me a small fortune and imagine my daughter’s son, a growing boy, totally a money saver. One day, we had eggs, sausage and hash browns and on the second we opted for homemade waffles. Of course, for you healthy eaters, there was yogurt, fresh fruit, oatmeal, cereal in addition to bagels and english muffins. Even the pickiest eaters will find something to eat.
2. Evening dinner and drinks, Monday through Thursday. We weren’t able to partake in this amenity but looking at the menu for the month, there was tasty options.
3. Complimentary grocery shopping service – I love this idea that you can call ahead and they will shop and stock your fridge with all you need saving you time (sorry you do have to pay for the groceries) of having to shop. And if you don’t have car, this is a fantastic amenity.
4. 24-hour onsite convenience store in case you forget something.
5. Newspaper delivery every weekday
6. Complimentary WiFi – OMG, this is an amazing amenity. It really irritates me that hotels charge for this. This only saved me $60.
7. Hotel fitness center – Okay we did not use it but it looked great.
8. Equipped business center with complimentary printing service. I had to change my train departure time so this was great to be able to print the return ticket.
9. Two flat-screen TVs – if you are traveling with kids, this is perfect. Adults in one room and kids in the other. No muss, no arguments.
10. A DVD player – You can bring your own DVDs or rent them from the convenience store for only $3. My daughter wanted to see Real Steal so I said why not. $3 for a Hugh Jackman movie, why not.
11. The Service – The staff was extremely nice, courteous and so accommodating from housekeeping who brought up extra ice to the front desk ensuring a cab was waiting to take us to the train station to helping us figure out the DVD player to the service at the breakfast bar, it’s all that you can ask from a hotel staff.
After extolling all the room features, wonderful hotel amenities, the staff, I will admit one thing the Homewood Suites is missing one thing, a pool. But after walking for hours, I don’t think the kids missed it at all.
That said, do I recommend Homewood Suites by Hilton Washington ? Yes, Yes, Yes. What is there not to like, all the creature comforts of home, great customer service, central location and lots of space for a family. Certainly, when I travel to other cities, the first order of planning is to see if there is a Homewood Suites located there.
