Gina Rodriguez stars in Miss Bala as Gloria, a young woman who discovers a strength she never knew she had when her closest friend is kidnapped. As she’s drawn into the dangerous world of cross-border crime, Gloria begins a journey of empowerment that will test her under the most extreme circumstances and force her to undergo a stunning transformation into an extraordinary and relatable hero.
I will state upfront that the only reason to see this movie is because of Gina Rodriguez and if you like the idea of women who find themselves in a life or death situation completely by accident and have to learn to kick ass to survive. Think Linda Hamilton in The Terminator.
Without a doubt, Miss Bala is one of those Hollywood large-scale and thrilling action-adventure. But it has to be noted that Miss Bala is also a barrier-breaking film that stars a Latina – and a cast and crew that was 95 percent Latinx.
“This is a big movie, with a courageous, butt-kicking and new kind of hero, and we were incredibly excited and proud to make it happen,” says Rodriguez.
I appreciate that Ms.Gina Rodriguez was trying to break from her character in her popular comedy-drama series Jane the Virgin but the plot is pretty easy to predict. That said, there were a couple of twists. But make no mistake, this involves the DEA and a Mexican Cartel so there is a lot of violence, shootouts and death of many characters. Basically, lots of men blowing and shooting up stuff. You just never know who is going to bite it.
I will say that I did like the movie although it was predictable. Do not be surprised that Gina Rodriguez makes more action pictures because, at the end of the day, she can actually carry a movie. Let’s hope she finds a better script!
Disclosure: NYC Single Mom went to a screening of the movie to facilitate this movie.
