With over 900 participating stores, the sixth-annual Free Shipping Day is expected to be better than ever thanks to stricter participation requirements. Unlike previous events, this year’s Free Shipping Day requires all stores to waive minimum order thresholds in addition to guaranteeing delivery by Christmas Eve. This means shoppers can find “real” free shipping from retailers big and small, as well as additional discounts from select stores.
“We’re excited to learn how shoppers respond to this year’s changes,” says Luke Knowles, CEO of Free Shipping Day. “It’s always been our intent to have stores offer free shipping with no minimums, and this year we decided to make it mandatory.”
Indeed, Free Shipping Day is a fledgling shopping holiday compared to veterans like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Yet, the online-only event surpassed Black Friday’s online spending by close to $300 million in 2010, and broke the $1 billion mark in online sales during both 2011 and 2012.
“After the success of the past few years, we decided we were tired of some stores offering lackluster deals,” continues Knowles. “We wanted to get back to our roots and offer shoppers the value we set out to create — actual free shipping on every purchase, whether it’s a kitchen appliance or a pair of socks.”
