Falcons, what do you know about these majestic predator birds? If you are like me, nothing. I just know they are birds. I didn’t even know which states they are native to, that is how clueless I am.
For this reason, when I was looking for activities during our stay at Hotel Hershey and I was intrigued by The Falconry Experience. The program is run by Master Falconer Jack Hubley and takes place on the Hotel Hershey grounds.
Not only was the experience educational and interesting, you actually get hands-on experience with the hawks. It’s a bit disconcerting but wow what an experience. The hawk is way up in the trees and once you put the meat (yes, meat) in your glove, it comes swooping down in seconds. They are super fast. We loved it. Admittedly I think my teen daughter was skeptical but when the hawk came flying onto her hand, she was thrilled.
If you visit, The Hotel Hershey in Harrisburg, definitely take the opportunity to take in the Falconry Experience because according to our master falconer, there are only so many places in the United States that you can even take in activity like this.
And just in case you were wondering, it is suitable for all ages. According to our master falconer, kids as young as 3 have been on the tours. In our group, there were a couple of kids under 5 and they were fine with the hawks.
