Everyone will fall in love with Moana #Moana #MoanaEvent @DisneyMoana

November 23, 2016 by NYCSingleMom Filed Under: Entertainment, Movies

Disney Studios latest and highly anticipated animated Moana sails into theaters November 23.  I first learned about Moana at 2015 D23 Expo when Dwayne Johnson (aka the Rock) came on stage when they announced he would be voicing one of the lead characters Maui.  Admittedly, my excitement and anticipation for this movie grew after interviewing Moana’s young star, Auli’I Cravalho.

About Moana

In "Moana," Walt Disney Animation Studios' upcoming big-screen adventure, a spirited teenager named Moana (left) sails out on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder. Along the way, she meets once-mighty demi-god Maui (right). Featuring Native Hawaiian newcomer Auli'i Cravalho as the voice of Moana, and Dwayne Johnson as the voice of Maui, "Moana" sails into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016. ©2015 Disney. Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows exactly why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli‘i Cravalho) meets the mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity.

4 Reasons Why You Will Love Moana

1. Moana

You will love her spunk and fire. Her fierce independence sets her off on journey that will change her life forever.  I think that we all no matter our age will identify with this young heroine who needs to figure her place in life and in her community. Voicing the young Moana is  the first time actress, Hawaiian Auli‘i Cravalho. Filmmakers auditioned hundreds of talented young women throughout the Pacific Islands before finding the gifted Auli‘i Cravalho  who does an outstanding job voicing Moana.

2. The Music of Moana

The original song “We Know the Way” is written and performed by Opetaia Foa‘i and Lin-Manuel Miranda, “We Know the Way” showcases the rich and vibrant voyaging life of Moana’s ancestors. The songs will make you stand tall and is sure to be popular with your kids.

3. Introduction of the Polynesian culture

As with any movie of this size and scope, the Disney team went to several Polynesian countries including Fiji, Samoa and Tahiti before even drawing one scene. The filmmakers spent time within local communities, meeting and sharing stories and meals with elders and chiefs and their families, as well as teachers, craftspeople, farmers, fishermen and navigators. They consulted with experts in archeology, anthropology, history, culture, music, dance, carving and more.

But their research did not end when they came back to the states. Deeply inspired by their time in the Pacific Islands, filmmakers continued to work with several of the people they met within their trips. This group of advisors came to be known as the Oceanic Story Trust (OST). The Trust includes anthropologists, educators, linguists, master tattooists, choreographers, haka practitioners and master navigators who collaborated with the team.
Another fun fact is that all the characters in “Moana” wear outfits made only from materials that would have been available to them 2, 000 years ago.
All of this research infused the movie’s look, characters and music. The movie is hopefully a way for kids and adults to get a sense and  learn albeit just scratching the surface of a people, area and culture they knew nothing about before seeing the movie.

4. It’s Funny

The movie introduces us to a host of side characters that sure to make your kids (and adults) laugh.  I think our favorite hilarious scene introduces us to Tamatoa,  a scary  50-foot crab who lives in Lalotai, the realm of monsters. And kids won’t know the actor Jemaine Clement but his distinctive voice and that song he sings will have your kids laughing. A Disney movie without a cute and funny sidekick, no way. Moana has two – Pua is the cutest little pig that is Moana’s loyal friend. And Heihei, rooster like no other you have ever seen on screen. Heihei is not that smart but offers plenty of laughs.

Moana is the must see movie of the Thanksgiving Break.  I highly recommend seeing Moana. You will be delighted by Moana, the music and the story.  And how can you miss a movie where one of the lead characters is People’s Sexiest Man Alive.
