From the moment I saw the trailer for Crazy Rich Asians, I knew I had to see this movie. It’s hard to believe that it’s the first movie that is being made in 25 years with all Asian cast. Then when I found out it’s based on the acclaimed worldwide bestseller by Kevin Kwan,
I immediately went out and bought the book in anticipation of the movie that is how much I was thrilled for this movie to open.
About Crazy Rich Asians
The story follows New Yorker Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding), to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick’s family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life. Not only is he the scion of one of the country’s wealthiest families, but also one of its most sought-after bachelors. Being on Nick’s arm puts a target on Rachel’s back, with jealous socialites and, worse, Nick’s own disapproving mother (Michelle Yeoh) taking aim.
It soon becomes clear that the only thing crazier than love is family, in this funny and romantic story sure to ring true for audiences everywhere.
5 Reasons Why You Must See Crazy Rich Asians
- The cast – did I mention that it’s the first all Asian cast. There are so many stand out actors it’s hard to name my favorites from Michelle Yeoh (“Star Trek: Discovery,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”) who plays Nick Young’s mom to Nico Santos (“Superstore”) who plays one of Henry’s cousin’s
- Awkwafina as Peik Lin, Rachel’s college friend showing her ropes in Singapore is hilarious. Remember that name or her given name Nora Lum who incidently is from Queens and a rapper. Crazy Rich Asians is her second big movie this year, she just happened to star in another standout movie “Oceans 8.” Remember her name she is this year’s Tiffany Haddish.
- Singapore – it is a character all unto itself from it’s modern skyscrapers to the famous food markets
- The super rich of Singapore – America is so isolated in its stereotypes of Asians. This really shows the moneyed wealth that is pretty unseen here in the states as well as the standard upbringing filled with English boarding schools, English accents and million dollar shopping trips.
- The one-liners – I don’t want to give it away. But my favorite two lines are when Peik’s father tells her sister to eat their nuggets because there are starving children in America and when one of the “mean” friends of Henry tells Rachel how much she loves her “Gap” look.
All that said, this movie is a romantic comedy starring fish out water starring Constance Wu as Rachel Chu. It’s not hard to sympathize with her, someone who has worked hard to get where she is in America and all of sudden be faced with “mean, rich” of Singapore. We, of course, root for her. This movie hits all the right notes, it’s funny, touching, well thought out, beautifully filmed, stunning locations and just plain good.
And look out, Constance Wu is a revelation. I know her from Fresh Off the Boat and she is of course always photographed in 80’s suburban mom clothes but she is hit’s out of the ballpark in this movie.
I recommend you see this movie, period! And by the way, this is one of the most attractive casts in any movie.
“Crazy Rich Asians” features an international cast of stars, led by Constance Wu (“Fresh Off the Boat”), Gemma Chan (“Humans”), Lisa Lu (“2012”), and Awkwafina (“Ocean’s 8,” “Neighbors 2”), with Ken Jeong (the “Hangover” films”) and Michelle Yeoh (“Star Trek: Discovery,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”). The large starring ensemble also includes Henry Golding, making his feature film debut, Sonoya Mizuno (“La La Land”), Chris Pang (“Marco Polo”), Jimmy O. Yang (“Silicon Valley”), comedian Ronny Chieng (“The Daily Show”), Remy Hii (“Marco Polo”), and Nico Santos (“Superstore”). Jon M. Chu (“Now You See Me 2”) directed the contemporary romantic comedy “Crazy Rich Asians.
