Are you looking for a sleeper hit this summer that will make you laugh, root for the main character and hungry? Yes, hungry! Jon Favreau now best known for his turn as the super successful director of the Iron Man franchise stars a super hot chef, Carl Casper who gets into a Twitter fight with a food critic, Ramsey Michael (Oliver Platt and why does the character have two first names? Is it because he’s a food critic) and ends up losing his job.

Twitter is the least of his problems. He is divorced from the successful Ines played by the lovely Sofia Vergara. I couldn’t figure out exactly what she did but had a feeling that she was the Hispanic Martha Stewart. To top it off, he pretty much is not the greatest Dad. He takes his son on food shopping trips to buy food for his restaurant, makes promises he never keeps and is always late picking up him on his days.
After he gets fired, at the insistence of his ex-wife he goes off to Miami with her and their son to regroup. In a hilarious, walk-on, he meets with his ex-wife’s super successful and rich ex-husband (lost yet) Robert Downey, Jr.
He finally takes his ex-wife’s advice to go into business for himself and opens up a Food Truck. And this is where the movie becomes a hilarious, food porn road trip. Along for the ride is his son and his sous chef, Martin played by the dependably funny, John Leguizamo. The road trip across america is filled with lots of great cooking scenes, social media photo ops, fun music, touching father and son moments and a lot of laughs.
As you might expect, Carl learns to love to cook again, garnering foodie fans from Miami to Los Angeles. Predictably he and his son bond.
While it might be said that the ending of the movie is predictable, it is still enjoyable to watch the stars of this movie truly enjoying themselves. Plus the food scenes are just yummy.
So take a moment and step away from the blockbuster studio pictures and spend time with the Chef.
