Metropolitan Museum of Art
- Timed entrance tickets now available
- Complimentary bicycle valet service will launch on opening day
The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced today a range of initiatives to welcome visitors back when it reopens on Saturday, August 29, after nearly six months of closure.
Did you know that The Met had not been closed for more than three days in over a century? The Museum has kept visitor and staff safety a priority while carefully planning its reopening and has developed comprehensive safety procedures.
In anticipation of the reopening, Dan Weiss, President and CEO, and Max Hollein, Director, shared a message in a blog post for visitors: “While much has changed at The Met and in the rest of our lives, we hope you will find comfort in some of the things that have not changed: our world-class collection and wide-ranging exhibitions. We invite you back to the Museum to explore our two million square feet, where there is always something new to uncover.”
Current Exhibitions
Making the MET: 1870- 2020
Making the Met: 1870-2020 explores pivotal moments of the museum. It was scheduled to open in March and is now open for viewing. It is an amazing collection that covers many genres, countries, and historical moments. I have just captured a few of the iconic moments plus ones that spoke to me viscerally and just plain found interesting.
Richard Avedon’s Iconic Photo of Marilyn Monroe
Degas Ballet Dancer
John Singer Sargent Madame X
The Vase of Immortals Offering the Peaches of Longevity (Xing Dynasty)
The Roof Garden- Hector Zamora Lattice Detour
Hector Zamora Lattice Detour references one of the defining symbols of our time – the wall. Yet this one is very different, the bricks are stacked 11 feet high and let light in. As an architectural element, it references celosia walls, the open brick structures found throughout the Middle East, Africa, Iberia, and Latin America. One of the things to notice is of course it’s open nature and the ability to see through it but to view the panorama of the New York skyline in a new light.
Jacob Lawrence: The American Struggle
I therefore hope that these paintings when complete will serve in some small way to further enlighten those who come in contact with them of the struggle, contributions and ingenuity of the American People.” Jacob Lawrence, 1953
This is an interpretation of the iconic Washington crossing the Delaware River painting we are used to seeing. Using the first-hand accounts of General George Washington’s, military aide Tench Tilghman, Lawrence interprets and depicts three boats densely packed versus Emmanue Leutze’s interpretation of Washington standing as he crossed the Delaware River.
