With Summer around the corner, my daughter will be spending more time on the internet. It goes without saying that as a parent in the era of social media, keeping her safe from cyber bullies is something I am constantly on the lookout for. Since June is National Internet Safety Month and summer break is almost here, it is the perfect time to have internet safety top of mind since she will be online more often..
4 Tips to Keep Your Kids Safe Online
- Never give personal information online – You may think as a blogger, I am pretty open about my life and have countless pictures of us on the site, I don’t use my daughter’s real name or even real names of friends and don’t indicate where I actually live in Manhattan. I regularly quiz my daughter on how to answer personal questions that may pop up even on kid-friendly sites.
- Parental Access to their social media sites – Facebook and Instagram have an age restriction which as we know kids are on both networks. I have access to all her social networks.
- Internet Access in my presence only – This is not hard to do since we live in a small apartment.
- Talk to Your Kids About Cyberbullying. And talk some more, you have to keep the lines of communications open.
