Ava DuVernay’s newest movie, Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time” is an epic adventure based on Madeleine L’Engle’s timeless classic.
A Wrinkle in Time stars Storm Reid as Meg Murry, a typical middle school student struggling with issues of self-worth who just wants to fit in. The daughter of two world-renowned physicists, she is intelligent and uniquely gifted, as is Meg’s younger brother, Charles Wallace, but she has yet to realize it for herself.
Complicating matters is the mysterious disappearance of Mr. Murry (Chris Pine), which has left Meg devastated and her mother broken-hearted. Her father’s disappearance makes the target of school bullies and causes her to an angry tween who lashes out.
But one day out of nowhere, her brother, Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) introduces Meg and her fellow classmate Calvin to three celestial beings (Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Who) who have journeyed to Earth to help search for their father, and together they embark on their formidable quest.
Traveling via a wrinkling of time and space known as tessering, they are transported to worlds beyond their imagination where they must confront a powerful evil force. To make it back home to Earth, Meg must face the darkness within herself in order to harness the strength necessary to defeat the darkness rapidly enveloping the Universe.
Directed by Oscar® nominee Ava DuVernay from a screenplay by Oscar winner Jennifer Lee based upon the beloved novel by Madeleine L’Engle, “A Wrinkle in Time” stars: two-time Academy Award® nominee Oprah Winfrey as Mrs. Which, Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon as Mrs. Whatsit, Emmy® nominee Mindy Kaling as Mrs. Who, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Mrs. Murry, Michael Peňa as Red and introducing Storm Reid as Meg Murry, with two-time Emmy winner Zach Galifianakis as The Happy Medium and Emmy nominee Chris Pine as Mr. Murry.
I will say that I really liked this movie a lot and find that your kids 8+ will love it as well. And Why!!
Newcomer Storm Reid Introduction to the World and the Importance of her Message for Girls
While this is not Storm Reid’s first movie, this her first movie as the lead in a huge Disney movie. I think many girls will identify with young Meg Murray and it’s because of Reid’s performance. She really puts forth the movie’s main message of the movie that girls everywhere are worthy and they are important.
Costumes Will Astound You
Spanish costume designer Paco Delgado (Les Miserables and The Danish Girl) designed outfits to be worn on each planet visited by the three Mrs.’s, and each was stunningly original, creatively outrageous and visually eye-catching. Talk about wow, if Delgado doesn’t get the Oscar nod for best costumes, something is wrong in the world.
All-Star Cast
The cast is filled with not just actresses but 3 very well-known actresses (Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kalig and Oprah) playing the Mrs. in the film. I only mention this because each is pitch perfect in what they bring to their character. My favorite Mrs. is Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon) who is funny and bit a sarcastic towards Meg. Love every time she is on screen. That all said, let’s be frank, this is stunt casting at its best and I am sure that Disney and Director Ms. DuVernay made a conscious decision to bring star power to the Mrs. roles and why not, they are famous and have been promoting the movie everywhere. But make no mistake, your kids will not know who they are, they will just remember as memorable Mrs. and that is all the matters. My teen daughter knows who Oprah maybe but she has no idea who Reese Witherspoon or Mindy Kallig is.
Breakout Star – Deric McCabe as Charles Wallace
Deric McCabe is very much not a one-note child actor. It can very adorable but he can also be creepy/scary when he is taken over by the “It.” You will love him and be happy when he is on the screen.
I really loved this movie and recommend it. Few people have told me that it’s not getting great reviews but I would disagree. I always think that movie critics view a movie like Wrinkle in Time as adults and not as tweens or teens.
This movie will delight your kids and provide them with a thoughtful, fun, lively, and a stunning visual movie with an underlying message that Meg says very defiantly says:
“I deserve to be loved”- Meg Murray
In a time of social media for our kids and insecurities, kids may feel, I love that the movie another positive quote, hopefully, will stick.
“Find your place in the universe”
I do believe that Wrinkle in Time will be remembered by kids years later and will become a Disney classic.
And for the record, my teen daughter requested to see the movie because she had read the graphic novel of the original book (recommend it highly for kids who are non-readers) and really liked the movie. And she is the target audience.
And don’t forget, I think your kids will love the Wrinkle in Time Barbie Dolls of the Mrs.
