SABAN’S POWER RANGERS out in theatres March 24 is a reboot of the original TV series but make no mistake this not your mamma’s Power Rangers. As a fan of the original series, I can definitely attest to that statement.
About Power Rangers
POWER RANGERS follows five ordinary teens who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove — and the world — is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat.
Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it’s too late, band together as the Power Rangers. Starring: Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler, Naomi Scott, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Elizabeth Banks and Bryan Cranston.
When my teen daughter and her one of her male friends said they were interested in seeing the movie, I was both peaked and skeptical of seeing the movie. I had no illusions that it would remotely be anything like the original television series and that is fine. It after all a $120 million reboot.
And yes I pleasantly surprised how much that I really liked this movie. You can definitely tell that $120 million dollars was spent on computer-generated villains, battle scenes, and the Power Rangers uniforms. The first half of the movie introduces us to the Power Rangers and how they actually become the Power Rangers. As part of their evolving into teenage super heroes, we are introduced to Zordon (played by Bryan Cranston) as a disembodied head inside a wall. Elizabeth Banks makes an appearance as villain Rita Repulsa. I love Elizabeth Banks and she plays up the villainess in all her over the top, campiness. She is great.
When it comes to movies like this, it’s all about the chemistry of the young stars to carry this movie because the “adults” come in and out throughout the movie. It has to be noted that it’s a very diverse set of Power Rangers so I was happy about that and they all interesting if not pretty predictable back stories.
Several scenes in the movie, I think parents will appreciate from the quarterback standing up to the bully who is picking on the kid with Asperbergers, to the Rangers realizing they need to have each other’s back to become Power Rangers.
Now with a movie like Power Rangers and movies like this you have to suspend belief in many of their adventures, like even in small town like Angel Grove, do I really believe one kid can ride his bike all over town and how did some of them get to the mountains without a car. The town is not that small!!
The one thing that did bother me or peaked my curiosity was they did not all tell how what they did to get detention which is where they all meet.
Do I recommend Power Rangers? Yes, I think your kids will like the Power Rangers for it’s humor, the new Power Rangers and of course, the action.

Disclosure: NYC Single Mom attended a screening of the movie. Opinions are 100% my own. The film is rated PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi violence, action and destruction, language, and for some crude humor.

I saw previews for this film and I’m interested in watching it. I am not a fan of old-school Power Rangers but this film has me intrigued.

I like the old school Power Rangers but thought it was cheesy. The movie is nothing like that at all. Is it perfect, no but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
