Recently, I had the pleasure of touring the The Los Angeles Zoo which is home to more than 1,100 mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles representing more than 250 different species of which 29 are endangered. Our visit focused mostly on the primates which was a perfect tie in to Disneynature’s new feature film Monkey Kingdom that will be out in theaters April 17.
During the visit, we visited animals from the Rainforest of the Americas like the uakari and the southern black howler monkey. I loved that we caught the Siamang Gibbons who communicate to each other by singing various tunes. And who can resist seeing a family of chimpanzees during feeding time. It was a beautiful day in sunny Los Angeles which made wandering the zoo an amazing delightful day. Check out my favorite animals we happened upon during our visit.
Siamang Gibbons
Uakari
Chimpanzees of the Mahale Mountains
Elephants of Asia
Sleeping Mommy and Daddy Hippo with their little Baby
Tom Mankiewicz Conservation Carousel
One of the treats of visiting the Los Angeles Zoo is riding the carousel which features 62 artisan-crafted figures and 2 chatiots as diverse as a komodo dragon, poison dart frog, Sumatran tiger and a dung beetle chariot.
About Disneynature Monkey Kingdom
Want to learn more about monkeys in the wild then don’t miss Disneynature Monkey Kingdom which opens on April 17. Disneynature Monkey Kingdom is a story about Maya, a clever and resourceful blonde-bobbed monkey in “Monkey Kingdom,” Disneynature’s new feature film set among ancient ruins in the storied jungles of South Asia. Maya’s world is forever changed when she welcomes her son, Kip, into her complicated extended family. Like all families, Maya’s has more than its share of colorful personalities—and she’s determined to give her son a leg up in the world.
When their longtime home at Castle Rock is taken over by powerful neighboring monkeys, Maya’s whole family is forced to relocate, and she uses her street smarts and ingenuity to lead them to untapped resources amidst strange new creatures and unsettling surroundings. Ultimately, they will all have to work together to reclaim Castle Rock, where Maya can hopefully realize her dreams for her son’s future.
The movie features a rich variety of characters, including a mischievous mongoose, simple-minded langur monkeys, predatory leopards and monitor lizards. “Monkey Kingdom” is directed by Mark Linfield (“Chimpanzee,” “Earth”) and co-directed by Alastair Fothergill (“Chimpanzee,” “Bears”) with music from award-winning composer Harry Gregson-Williams (“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” “Shrek” movies),
