Bethenny Frankel opens up about motherhood, being married and New York City pre-school madness.
Last week, I was invited to participate in a conference call with Bethenny Frankel of Bethenny Gets Married and formerly of The Real Housewives of New York. When I first got the invitation I almost blew it off. Why? Last summer, I attended the National Hammocks Day event with Kathie Lee Gifford and requested to interview Bethenny. The PR folks told me, sorry. Whatever! I was going to interview Kathie Lee Gifford, a bigger star in my opinion who was as wonderful, gracious and funny as she was on The Today Show, in case you were wondering.
Curiosity got the best of me, so I participated. Why not? It’s a conference call and hey, I was able to participate in my sweats.
The first thing that struck me about listening to her answer questions and what definitely accounts for Bethenny’s appeal is that she is completely unfiltered about talking about her life. She is, who is she is and she does not apologize for it.
Keeping the Spark Alive with Jason
If you watch the show, you know that she and Jason are sooo different. Jason is very small town, grounded, has down to earth friends and is close to his family. Bethenny is a nomad who has lived in in a gazillion places, has intimacy issues and has no issues with being on camera all the time.
According to Bethenny, like other married couples with a baby, they are trying to keep the spark alive and go on a weekly date night. “We do date night once a week. We switch off on who chooses the surprise place we’re going to go and we usually pick some hip place so we can still feel like we’re cool. And then we get some!” Her new line of Skinny Girl Smoothers and Shapers includes “Lazy Lingerie.” Basically, you wear the smoothers and shapers under your shirts/blazers, and when you take them off, voila, sexy lingerie. Why bother with having to change once you get home, you already have it on. One- step instant romance, going from daily wear to sexy wear. Of course, you don’t have to be married to wear them.
Baby daughter, Bryn
Cute little baby Bryn was on the call, which was cute to hear a baby in the background and shows the softer side of Bethenny. She admitted that breast-feeding wasn’t easy which again is so in line with her honesty. Because she and Jason are older parents they definitely appreciate their daughter and think it’s best thing to happen to them.
Losing weight after the baby
If you are a tabloid reader or just glance at them at the supermarket, I am sure you are aware of all the post tabloid pictures and headlines of Bethenny after Bryn was born. How did she do it??? Good question.
According to Bethenny, somewhat defensively, “I did not treat pregnancy like a complete free-for-all binge. She said she only gained 35 pounds and talked about not be able to eat days after giving birth via C-Section until she passed gas. Since I adopted, I have no idea if this is true – feel to weigh in. Once she was able to begin eating, she just ate as she had done before the pregnancy and did not do a crash diet. “You don’t have to binge while you’re pregnant and you don’t have to crash diet when you’re not.”
Handling the New York City Pre-School madness (This was my question)
As it has often been quoted, getting into a pre-school in New York City is harder than getting into Harvard. According to Bethenny, she is not going to get all crazy and let the chips fall where they may. This I believe but… Sarah Jessica Parker said she was all for sending her kids to public school but we all know they go to private school. I hope she does go through the process because she will be honest about the process in her own refreshingly, honest way and I would love to hear her perspective. Marcia Gay Harden talked about it and again so refreshing to hear her perspective as well.
The new season, Bethenny Ever After premieres Monday, February 28 at 10 on Bravo.
Just curious, are you a fan or will you watch her new show? I plan to at least for the few episodes as I do find it entertaining plus a good friend of mine and I are still trying to figure out where she lives and look for clues in all the shows. Insane, right.

Fun! I wouldn’t call myself a fan but I think she’s smart and hard working and like how she took her reality fame and turned it into a business. We met last month and she was pleasant. She has a hard edge to her but seems real. Regarding the weight loss, the cover story of US Weekly this week (for whatever that’s worth) delves into her obsession with weight. So do I think it was normal for her to return to a size 0 a month after giving birth, no I don’t.

I’m a fan of hers and have watched all her shows, own the books, etc. I have yet to meet her but would love to. I love that’s so unfiltered with herself an her life. It’s really refreshing.

Hopefully I will actually meet her instead of having a phone conference call. I think she is actually funny.
