Review: Alexander and The Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day #VeryBadDay @DisneyPictures

October 7, 2014 by NYCSingleMom Filed Under: Entertainment, Movies

Disney’s “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” follows the exploits of 11 year old Alexander (Ed Oxenbould) as he experiences the most terrible and horrible day of his young life — a day that begins with gum stuck in his hair, followed by one calamity after another. But when Alexander tells his upbeat family about the misadventures of his disastrous day, he finds little sympathy and begins to wonder if bad things only happen to him. He soon learns that he’s not alone when his mom (Jennifer Garner), dad (Steve Carell), brother (Dylan Minnette) and sister (Kerris Dorsey) all find themselves living through their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Anyone who says there is no such thing as a bad day just hasn’t had one.

Steve Carrell movies, Jennifer garner husband, #VeryBadDay

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day was a staple in our household when my daughter was younger. I wondered how they would translate the book into a movie. Well they can’t bu I  do think the producers of the movie  retain the essence of the book and it’s message. That all said, I really liked movie for several reasons. The cast is appropriately cast and do a journeyman’s job of acting.

#VeryBadDay

Although I will say that I was surprised that Steve Carell took this job, he is the perfect Dad retaining his optimism even though he has been laid off from his job for 7 months and his now a stay at home dad (a “famy)  while his Type A wife Jennifer Garner is the hard charging book executive.

The kids all fit their roles as well including the title character Ed Oxenbould as the downtrodden, everything bad happens to me, Alexander.

The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day does turn out to be just that  horrible things happening to the family in hilarious ways. I found the day to be rather predictable but funny. Remembering that this is a Disney movie, nothing bad can really happen right and it really doesn’t but there were for a few laugh out loud scenes (and I won’t repeat them as it would be spoilers.)

I will be honest in that I thought the writers leveraged the feel and storylines of  of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Big. No matter, I know your kids will love the movie. My daughter thought it was hilarious.

Definitely add Disney’s “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” to your must see Fall movie list, you walk away with a smile on your face.

I’ve heard such great things about this film. I love the idea of looking at the bright side of things even when everything is going wrong.

I think we have all been there for those bad days. That is also what makes this film more closer to reality, and most of the time when you reflect, you can see the humor in every day life as well.

Glad to hear the kids will like it. We’re taking a group to watch it this weekend & I couldn’t tell if they would like it from the commercials. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
