BLENDED stars Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore which is their third movie together. Remember their hit romantic comedies “50 First Dates” and “The Wedding Singer”, I do. The Wedding Singer is one of my favorite rom-coms.
In BLENDED, Sandler and Barrymore are single parents. After their disastrous blind date, single parents Lauren (Barrymore) and Jim (Sandler) agree on only one thing: they never want to see each other again. There would be no movie unless they meet up again, right? And they do, both signing up for an African Safari where they are all stuck sharing a suite for a week. And the hijinks ensues.
Admittedly, even though I was not impressed by the trailers, I ended up liking this movie, thought it had a lot of heart and landed a lot of laughs. And Blended is cute and bringing the cuteness is one of my favorite actress, Drew Barrymore. She is just such a likeable character in every movie she plays so you will not be disappointed in her performance. In essence, she has gone from playing cute single women to now a cute single mom.
And Adam Sandler pretty much calls in his performance, he pretty much plays his Adam Sandler self only he is now a single dad with three girls, raising two of them like boys. Seriously, all the girls get their hair cut at a barber, thus making two of them look like boys which is running gag in the first half of the movie.
One of the messages of the movie is that parents need to be all in for their kids albeit only 99% and 1% for themselves. Not so bad a message in my opinion. And certainly, it was nice to see how Lauren helps Jim’s daughter actually look like a girl rather than continue to walk around looking like a boy in her track suit and Jim helping Lauren’s son learn how to hit a baseball.
Now I would be remiss to remind you that all of the hijinks take place in a very luxurious African resort which provides Terry Crews to play the “sexy” singer with his back up band to pop up singing songs adding a punch of laughter throughout the movie. This was funny in the first half of the movie but gets old by the end.
This movie is rated PG 13 and remember that means there is sexual content and bad language in the movie. And for good reason. If you have seen previous Adam Sandler movies, then you know what to expect. The humor is sophomoric, with lots of cleavage, sexual references (including masturbation), a visit to the drugstore to buy “girlie” magazines and its not who you think is buying it and more.
And finally, let me say to the screenwriters and to Adam Sandler, I have no idea why the Kevin Nealon and his movie wife (I don’t know her name) were supposed to bring to the table but their characters and performance was totally unnecessary, unfunny and seriously inappropriate for kids and adults. Just disgusting and no point. I just think Sandler wanted to put Nealon in the movie.
My daughter really thought this movie was hilarious but she is 11 years old and also thought the Kevin Nealon scenes were gross. Should you see it? Yes but if you are an Adam Sandler fan so you know what to expect because I did think it was funny and it had a lot of heart, surprisingly so. P.S. I was surprised at how many kids were at my screening because again, I thought it was inappropriate for younger kids. In fact, I even thought much of the movie was inappropriate for my daughter who is 11.
P.S. Try not to think about the plausibility of this movie, your head will spin off at the laziness of the screenwriters not to have thought things through (I will give you one example – the buying of girlie magazines at a drugstore. What drugstore sells them next to Good Housekeeping? And the father just happens to be at the drugstore buying tampons for his daughter. It was plot device for the two characters to meet)

Glad to hear it’s better than the trailers. I’ll have to give it a try then
