When I was growing up, we never argued with our parents and I mean never, even as adults. When my dad said do something, we did it. PERIOD! He often used the expression “because I said so!” No explanation, what ever.
Our generation of parents are expected or should I say it’s recommended that we provide explanations of why our child can, shouldn’t do something or have something. Looking back through the years, I have to admit that providing explanations to my daughter only leads to a prolonged argument/discussion with my daughter.
The other day, my daughter wanted to leave after school to go the park and then return back to the school for her after school class.
I told her “no.”
Actually I had previously told her “no”, a week ago. As you can see from the text thread, she obviously wanted an explanation.
I was at work and not in the mood to deal with this so I just texted “because I said so and I don’t owe you a reason.”
Would this have worked in person? Who knows?
But I am going to actually try this strategy in our next face to face encounter. We shall see. I unfortunately do not have the Darth Vader voice my dad had so this may get ugly.
Have you ever told your child, “No and because I said so?” What was their response?
