Interviewing Vince Vaughn last year while he was filming Delivery Man in New York City, I was totally intrigued at the premise of his latest film in which his character, David Wozniak discovers that he is the biological father of 533 children and 142 of them are suing to learn his identity.
It goes without saying that Vince Vaughn has starred in some of the biggest box-office comedies of the past decade, some of which are my favorite, go-to-films including, “Wedding Crashers”, my all-time favorite although I love watching Swingers when it pops up.
As expected, Vaughn’s life has changed since his first film and he is now married and the father to two children. He was drawn to the role of David Wozniak because he was interested in addressing the issues of balancing life and family from a fresh perspective.
During the interview, Vaughn provided an additional insight into why he took the role. “The director (Ken Scott) is a very passionate storyteller and I think what he is doing with this story is really unique and inspiring because it’s not an overly obvious way in to some very kind of sentimental and universal feelings I think about parenthood and also about life. I think the skill set Ken has, which is very unique, is that it kind of is all of those things in one movie. So, it’s makes it a very unpredictable story. You’re not quite sure what emotion’s gonna come next.”
Family friendly fare is not exactly how I would describe Vince Vaughn movies but it seems Vaughn is interested in mixing up his film choices stating that while he is not so much actively looking for family oriented films but looking for “more grounded performances, which I used to do and not so broad.”
What I found surprising given Vaughn’s known for his humor, and off the cuff improvisational skills was how scripted the film was, which Vaughn was okay with. “It’s pretty much all scripted. There’s a couple places where I added some lines, but it was nice to go and just give a performance and work off the script.”
That said he did bring his own experiences into the film mentioning “the ultrasound scene” which was all based on his own experience. Trust me, the scene is funny and you can envision, Vince Vaughn, future dad actually going through it.
Finally, I liked to say what I found interesting about the interview is how much Mr. Vaughn pretty much reminded me of the emotions you will go through as you are watching Delivery Man. Before interviewing celebrities, I always have preconceived notions about actors that I admire and like. One expects someone as funny as Vince Vaughn is, to be funny throughout the interview but what you forget is how complex actors are and Vaughn was that, funny, introspective and thoughtful.
Stay tuned for my review of Delivery Man (spoiler alert, I liked it a lot and you should put it on your holiday viewing list.)
