My daughter is a few days away from finishing the 4th grade so that means there is that one last publishing party.
“You are coming right?” my daughter asked me a couple of weeks ago.
“Of course, I always come your publishing parties!”
What I wanted say is I have never missed one publishing party even when it was not advantageous ( I spent 2008 after the financial markets imploded worried about keeping my job so I was working a gazillion hours a week plus I worked for a douche bag with no kids) to do so.
I also wanted to point over the years how many kids parents rarely attend the publishing parties but I didn’t.
Don’t get me wrong I love these events because I think they only happen once and it’s a moment in time you never get back. It means so much to my daughter that I support her no matter what which isn’t that we parents are there to do.
For me, I just like going to see her in school because I get to her in the environment she spends most of her days. I also get a glimpse of the kids she talks about and how they all “play” together in the sandbox.
I get that the other parents maybe can’t come because of their work schedule but just to see your child’s beaming face after they read their story is a memory that can’t be replaced nor a picture will even come close.
When my daughter finished her historical fiction story (the assignment was to write a story about coming to Ellis Island), and looked up, looking for support and approval. I gave her the thumbs up all with a proud smile and she smiled proudly.
Those are the memories that she will carry with her long into adulthood, the memory of her mom smiling with approval.
