Disclosure: I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Boys & Girls Clubs of America. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.
As my daughter spends more time on the Internet, I have become increasingly more vigilant on which sites she accesses and of course, cyberbullying. Since June is National Internet Safety Month and summer break is almost here, it is the perfect time to have internet safety top of mind since she will be on line more often.
Of course, accessing inappropriate sites is a concern but cyberbullying is more of concern for me and her. Even though she is not yet on Facebook or Twitter, she actually has friended kids from her class onto my Instagram account. During the school year, there was one incident with a girl in her class who is not only a bully in class but online as well. This incident has led to many discussions about Internet Safety.
4 Tips to Keep Your Kids Safe Online
- Never give personal information online – You may think as a blogger, I am pretty open about my life and have countless pictures of us on the site, I don’t use my daughter’s real name or even real names of friends and don’t indicate where I actually live in Manhattan. I regularly quiz my daughter on how to answer personal questions that may pop up even on kid friendly sites.
- Parental Access to their social media sites – Facebook and Instagram have an age restriction which as we know kids are on both networks. Since my daughter is on my instagram account, I see everything she posts. That said, in the next year she will have her own Instagram account, which I have told her I have to have access. Facebook is a bit different, whether it’s friend’s mom or her godmother, some adult has to have access.
- Internet Access in the my presence only – This is not hard to do since we live in a small apartment.
- Talk to Your Kids About Cyberbullying – The Boys and Girls Clubs of America website offers “Are You a Cyber Smart Parent?” quiz (it’s super short and super eye-opening!) My key takeaway statistic is that 1 in 3 kids have experienced cyber bullying. Tips for Parents on Cyberbullying is a great added resource.
Important resources include Tips for Parents on Online Privacy, Tips For Parents on Cell Phone and Mobile Technology Use and Tips for Parents on Social Networking.
