Star Wars Into Darkness directed by JJ Abrams, starring Chris Pines (Captain Kirk); Zachary Quinto (Spock); Zoe Saldana (Lt. Uhura); Simon Pegg (Scotty); John Cho (Sulu); and Karl Urban (Bones). opened last week and no surprise box office is booming.
Star Trek Into Darkness Official Synopsis: In the wake of a shocking act of terror from within their own organization, the crew of The Enterprise is called back home to Earth. In defiance of regulations and with a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads his crew on a manhunt to capture an unstoppable force of destruction and bring those responsible to justice. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
Review: Whether you are a Star Trek fan or not, go see this movie. I love JJ Abrams who directed the 2009 reboot and brought this brand back to life. Abrams has admitted that he was never a Star Trek fan, never seeing the shows growing up but has made both movies for both groups, the Trekkies and Non-Trekkies with no Star Trek background (which would include kids).
As a fan of the show and the Star Trek movies made with the original cast, Abrams with Star Trek Into the Darkness upped the ante with the returning cast.
There is just so much to like about this movie from the plotline (which is not perfect but go with it), the cast who fit their roles perfectly (and that is hard to do since the original actors are pop culture icons), the special effects, humor of Simon Pegg as Scotty, the action, the villain and the references to the original show (keep the Trekkies happy, I say.)
I will admit that I loved all the scenes with Spock and Uhura as the bantering couple, Quinto and Saldana are a very well matched couple and have a lot of chemistry. There is one scene where I actually cried. And Chris (pillow lips) Pine is the perfect Kirk. I only have two criticisms of the movie, not enough Sulu (John Cho, I love John Cho) and the blond chick was totally miscast as the Advanced Technology specialist or something like that. It was obvious she was cast as the blond love interest. JJ, you can do better to find a good looking actress but who can actually act and isn’t so distracting with her blond hair. Of course, I am not a fan boy so us girls have to look to Uhura to do her action heroine thing.
And let’s give Abrams credit for using Zoe Saldana as the woman officer who can speak Vulcan, fire a taser and basically kick ass. She is a great model for girls who is more than capable in saving herself and her boyfriend if need be.
Yes, can you tell, I loved it. Star Trek Into Darkens is well worth seeing. I will say this as a New Yorker who has to be pay $13 for the price of entry, this is a movie that deserves to be seen on the big screen. And now that I have seen the movie, I will be taking my 10 year old to the movie.
Note for parents, there is one questionable scene with Kirk and two women in bed. It wasn’t too bad, there is no kissing or explicitness to the scene. As fans know, it plays into the Captain Kirk’s character as a player who does not discriminate in who he sleeps with and we mean he does not discriminate (Star Trek fans know what I mean) and so it has to be in the movie.
Disclosure: NYC Single Mom was not compensated for this post and yes, I paid my own way because dammit it’s worth seeing.
