The last two summers, my daughter has gone to the Willie Mae Rock n Roll Camp for Girls. Her instrument of choice, the drums. Each time, her teachers have told me to sign her up for drum lessons. Somehow, I have to yet to get my act together to make this happen.
Like many schools, the students in my daughter’s fourth grade get to audition to make the school band. Of course, I encouraged my daughter to try out. Now mind you, I did not at first encourage her to try out for percussion. Can you imagine, drum practice in a one bedroom New York apartment? I wanted her to play the flute because common, it’s light and wouldn’t really bug the neighbors.
But kudos to the school musical director, who forwarded a pros and cons of all the band instruments including prices. When I looked at percussion, I thought he had forgotten to put in all the information because there was no inclusion of price or “warnings of bothering the neighbors.” Lo and behold, the kids practice on a little table drum, no drum set needed. Woohoo!
I told my daughter to go for it and she got in. I was so excited for her when she came home with her little table drum. And I didn’t even have to buy the drumsticks, since another parent had an extra pair.
