My daughter has officially started the fourth grade. Even though I was still not comfortable about talking to her about her period, I forced myself to set up time during a pre-school lunch about the fact that she “may” get her period and that I wanted to include in her backpack a little kit of items (including U by Kotex Tween Pads which are made especially for tween girls. )
“You know how I talked about getting your period,” I began somewhat confidently.
“La La La La,” my daughter started chanting, literally covering her ears.
“Stop, I don’t want to hear this again!” she said.
“But we must talk about this because it’s possible it may happen while you are at school and I want you to be prepared if it does happen” I said.
“Please stop, I just don’t want to talk about this” bowing her head on the table.
“Okay, I will stop talking about it but, when we get home I AM going to show you the items you need and I AM going put the little kit in your backpack.” I insisted.
“That’s fine, let’s just eat.” she again put her head down.
Well that went well. I would like to say that even though I did not want to have the conversation, I did sound confident and factual that hey, this is going to happen whether you like it or not and you need to be prepared.
When we got home, I walked her through her little kit and when school started, I put the kit in her front backpack pocket so that she is prepared but it wasn’t intermingled with her books and pencils and need to look at it every time she opened her backpack. Once I was finished, I mentioned to my daughter that if she wanted to, she could visit the U by Kotex site, if she had more questions about getting her period and it would be an opportunity to read other girl’s stories. At this point, she walked away as though that’s enough (again) with this topic.

Definitely do it early. Good thing I talked to my daughter when she was 11 since a few months later, when she was still 11, she started.
