Before we headed to the “White Carpet” Frankenweenie Premiere at the El Capitan Theatre, we had the opportunity to interview three of the main characters from the Frankenweenie cast: Charlie Tahan (voice of “Victor Frankenstein”); Robert Capron (voice of “Bob”) and Atticus Shaffer (voice of “Edgar ‘E’ Gore”).
All three boys were a delight to interview bringing an enthusiasm and passion about their craft but also the exuberance of teen boys that thoroughly came across when they answered our questions. For those unfamiliar with the process of doing press for a movie, we were just one of hundreds of interviews they have to do which needs mentioning because all three were were just so well-spoken, articulate, genuinely excited and funny as they answered our probing questions.
What was working with Tim Burton like?
Charlie Tahan: Well he’s, he’s surprisingly normal. (His response elicited laughter from the group). I didn’t expect him to be like somebody like a scary guy but he knows like how he wants each scene to be.
What was your favorite thing about your character?
Charlie Tahan: Victor is kind of like loosely based on Tim’s childhood I think a little bit. So when it’s just like I said, he’s like been one of my favorite directors, so I was honored to be able to sort of play him.
Do You Have a Pet?
Charlie Tahan: I have one pet left. Samantha the dog, I’ve had, I’ve had like rabbits and a hamster, and lizards before. They’re all dead now. (His response brought laughter from the group). I have a dog named Samantha.
What was working with Tim Burton like?
Robert Capron: The thing I liked about Tim was that he definitely had a specific idea of how he wanted like every line to be.
What was your favorite thing about your character?
Robert Capron: Despite the fact that he’s really big and he could very easily be like a bully, he’s not, he’s actually a very nice person. Like that was one of the things I liked about his character.
What did you find challenging about it (doing a voiceover versus live action)?
Robert Capron: I remember the first time I actually saw my character like for my first recording session, they just had the puppet there. And the first thing I said when I saw the puppet, is it even possible for somebody to be that big? Because like (big laughs from the group) in the movie my character is like ridiculously big and that’s one of the things I liked about it.
And because of that, when I was recording my lines, I would have to imagine what it would be like to be this ridiculously big kid. And like try and incorporate that into my voice.
What was working with Tim Burton like?
Atticus Shaffer: My favorite part of him in particular was the fact that he is so creative. He doesn’t want to follow the crowd or be a part of the big machine. He, he wants to do his own thing. He wants to be creative, groundbreaking, because it- and this film in particular is the first 3-D black and white animation.
What did you find challenging about it (doing a voiceover versus live action)?
Atticus Shaffer: I love doing voice over, that’s the whole reason I got into the business in the first place, is because I love to play with my voice. I love telling stories, being able to put myself into these new, completely new characters.
Any particular actors that inspire you?
Atticus Shaffer: I’m a big fan of Liam Neeson and Russell Crowe, just because they are so professional in their craft and, and they do voiceover along with actual theatrical movies.
Thanks to Charlie Tahan (voice of “Victor Frankenstein”); Robert Capron (voice of “Bob”) and Atticus Shaffer (voice of “Edgar ‘E’ Gore”) for a fun interview. I look forward to seeing and/or hearing more of their work.
