Picking Apples at Wilkens Farms

One of our favorite Fall activities is apple picking. Wilkens Farms, located in Yorktown Heights,  is one of the many numerous Apple Orchards in New York and one of our favorite apple orchards to visit in the Fall. Given we don’t have a car, it is necessary to enlist friends with cars to get out to the Farm, plus no one wants to carry bushels of apples on the train. Wilkens Farm sells a variety of apples depending on the time you go in the September and of course, pumpkins for the Fall/Halloween season.

Start your apple picking at the Red Pavilion to buy  bags, baskets, and picking poles (available for a small rental fee with a deposit, I definitely recommend picking up a pole to get at those apples at the top of the trees).

You can either ride the hay wagon to the  picking orchard. This is fun for the kids but it’s a short short ride.

As you wander up and down the orchards, definitely take in the view as it’s breathtaking part of the New York and is a nice change from the big city.

My recommendation is if you are going with another family to split a bag of apples, unless you are planning a lot of baking. The bags are huge. In addition, dress for the occasion, my daughter and I always wear rain boots as the orchards can get pretty muddy in places.
