In preparing for talking to my daughter about her first period, U by Kotex has been a fantastic resource. I would definitely recommend the site if you are hesitant, uncomfortable about the topic, need a refresher (like me) or need visual aids. The site has been designed to prep you to answer every imaginable scenario.
Helpful Tips to Preparing for The Talk at Kotex
- Pick Your Day and Prepare For The Talk – This section provides a calendar for you to choose the day you want to have The Talk. This is a fantastic idea so you can put a stake in the ground on when to have the conversation. I know this seems like it’s too much but if you are like me who feels uncomfortable with the idea of having The Talk, it is actually helpful in that, it forces you to actually have a deadline. For my daughter and I have pre-school ritual of going for ice cream and so since this is part of our annual tradition, I plan to discuss the topic then and let the discussion go from there.
- Start The Conversation – This section lists helpful ideas on starting the conversation that includes: 1) Putting together a First Period Kit 2) Choosing a book for your daughter (My choice was American Girl’s The Care and Keeping of You: The Body Book for Girls (American Girl Library) 3) Providing a journal for her to write her follow up questions that she may not want to discuss out loud.
- Questions She May Ask – This section is all about questions she may. While you may know the answers to the questions, I found this section pretty much a refresher on how to phrase a response and aha, she may ask that question.
While I do feel a tad nervous about talking my daughter, I feel that U by Kotex comprehensive site has truly prepared me.
